Where AI is used
- Research assistance. AI tools help gather and cross-check reporting on a developing story. Every fact they surface is verified against the original source before it appears in an article.
- Drafting. AI assists in producing first drafts from verified research notes.
- Data visuals. Charts and tables in our articles are generated programmatically from figures stated in the article text.
Where AI is not used
- Deciding what a story means. The two-lens reading — the actual argument of each piece — is an editorial judgment, not a generated one.
- Verifying facts. Figures are checked against primary sources by a person before publication.
- Publishing unreviewed text. No article goes live without human review.
Why we disclose this
AI-assisted publishing is common and, done carelessly, produces exactly the kind of thin, unverified content that makes the web worse. We would rather be explicit about our process and be judged on the result than leave readers guessing.
If you find an error, a fabricated figure, or a source that does not support the claim attached to it, please tell us. That is the fastest way to hold this standard to account.
